Barnett Freedman (1901-1958) A YOUNG WOMAN SEATED BENEATH A TREE HOLDING A CUP signed, inscribed "To Griselda Allen" and dated 1939 in brown ink lower margin colour lithograph 16.2 x 9.2cms; 6 3/8 x 3 5/8in.
NB Barnett Freedman was a painter, printmaker, draughtsman and teacher, born in East London to a poor Jewish family then recently arrived from Russia. By 1916 he was working as a draughtsman to a monumental mason and then studied under William Rothenstein at St. Martins School of Art and subsequently at the Royal College of Art 1922-5. After graduating, he began to exhibit at the NEAC and became a pioneer in reviving colour lithography. By the time of his death, Freedman had established a firm reputation as an illustrator and designer of posters, stamps, books and book jackets.
