Free pre-sale valuations
Free verbal valuations are available to anyone proposing to sell at Anderson and Garland and can be given on everything from single items to complete house contents. Goods may be brought to our salerooms on selected free valuation days or where appropriate, we will be to arrange a free home visit at your convenience. See contact us. Assistance with the transport of goods to our salerooms can also be arranged by Anderson and Garland, who can instruct a removal contractor on the vendor’s behalf. Furthermore, homes from which all contents are to be removed are, where possible, left in broom clean condition.
Specialist cataloguing
Anderson & Garland offer more than 150 years collective experience in appraising and valuing antiques and works of art. Our specialist staff are expert at presenting relevant information for our well produced catalogues and internet listings. See meet the staff. All our catalogues enjoy a national and international mailing list.
Sale publicity
All sales held by us are widely publicised. This includes the posting of catalogues on our own website as well as other prime collectors and antiques trade websites; advertisements in the antiques trade international press and the daily and weekly local press, whilst the media is kept informed of any items of exceptional interest to further publicise sales. In this way the content of each sale is brought to the attention of the widest possible audience.
Selling procedure
Our select catalogue sales are between one and three days duration and are all separated into specialist areas of collecting. These range from prints, watercolours and oil paintings, to furniture and rugs and ensure that all goods offered on behalf of vendors are given due prominence within the context of the overall sale. Selling is conducted by our team of auctioneers who are amongst the most experienced in the North.
An additional selling facility of Anderson & Garland of particular interest to the legal profession or other representatives of deceased estates, or those wishing to dispose of whole house contents, is our general antiques and modern furnishings sales held every two weeks. These consist of items of affordable eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century furniture, ceramics, glass, pictures, prints, silver, jewellery, textiles, collectors items and objects of art. These are the busiest and best in the region.
Commission charges
Anderson & Garland dispose of vendors’ goods on a commission basis. Rates are agreed with the vendors or their representatives before the goods in question are entered in our sales and a copy of the sales agreement supplied for their records. It is at this point also that other details of the transaction are agreed such as those covering the reserve (if required) on goods; insurance costs, etc.
Payment
Payment of sums due to vendors is normally made within 10 to 15 working days of a Town & County sale and 21 working days after a Fine Art sale, providing payments have been collected by buyers.
Warehousing
The Auctioneers exempt themselves from any liability to goods delivered to their salerooms without sufficient sale instructions and reserve the right to make a warehousing charge in this respect. A similar warehousing charge will be applicable for goods left on their premises after they have requested the Vendor to remove them.
Withdrawn Items
Anderson & Garland reserve the right to charge a withdrawal fee of 10% (plus VAT) of the lower estimate for any item/s removed from any sale by the Vendor if the item/s have been catalogued and/or a catalogue has been published and marketing undertaken. Any item/s withdrawn from the sale must be collected promptly and will not be released until the above fee has been paid in full. Failure to collect in good time will incur further storage charges of £1 per lot per day, recoverable by the sale of the item/s if they remain uncollected for a period of more than two months.
Unsold Items
Where goods remain unsold and are deemed by us to be unsaleable, you will be contacted and given the option of removing such item/s. Any item/s left uncollected for a period of more than two weeks after notification will be disposed of without further notice.
