Hidden messages and tokens of love; that is the thread that runs through our August auction of silver, jewellery, and watches. Look out for lot 403, a signet ring inscribed with the line; "I love you more than yesterday and less than tomorrow" taken from the 1889 French poem by Rosemonde Gérard.
Another gift of equal passion is lot 547; a Scandinavian white metal vinaigrette, or spice box, known as a hovedvandsæg in Denmark or luktevannshus in Norway. In the form of a crowned love heart, these were given as love tokens during the 18th and 19th Century from a gentleman to his intended bride. The aromatic fragrant contents designed to revive the senses, and ward off evil.
From the 19th Century is a delightful Victorian brooch and button set, lot 523, of gilt metal and mounted with silverplate cherubim. They hide a secret only revealed when you turn the set over, as hidden in the back, barely noticeable, is a concertina album of miniature photographs, likely the owner’s children. Quite the novelty at a time when photography was still in its infancy.
Lastly but certainly not least, either as a gift for a loved one or for oneself; is a gold loveheart pendant, set with a solitaire diamond, lot 378.

Following Parts One and Two of the Brian Whitton Collection - which together drew international attention and introduced new audiences to one of the most significant private collections of John Tunnard's work ever assembled - Anderson & Garland is proud to present the third and final chapter.
Part Three steps beyond Tunnard to reveal the full breadth of Brian's eye as a collector. Over decades of looking, acquiring, and living with art, Brian assembled a remarkable group of modern and contemporary works that reflect a sensibility both discerning and adventurous; the collection of a man who clearly understood Tunnard's restless curiosity because, in many ways, he shared it.
Whether you are a collector of modern British art, an admirer of mid-century abstraction, or simply someone who has followed the Whitton Collection from the beginning, Part Three offers a fitting and rewarding conclusion to an exceptional series of sales.
Anderson and Garland is one of the UK’s largest Auction Houses and has a worldwide reputation for offering major single-owner collections at auction. Our team of Specialists blend expertise and experience with tailored marketing strategies, to ensure a collection is presented to best reflect the passion of the owner and reach a large and engaged audience.
