George H.W. Bush (b.1924) and Mikhail Gorbachev (b.1931) at the Malta Summit 1989: a signed manuscript letter on headed paper, ''Dear Walter, we are taking a short break to thank you for your help in this important summit'', 11 3/4 x 8 1/4in. (30 x 21cms). PROVENANCE Walter Oakley was a sound engineer for CNN covering the Malta Summit, who states that the letter was written by Gorbachev and signed in front of him by the two. HISTORY The Malta Summit of December 2nd-3rd 1989 was the second meeting between Bush and Gorbachev (a year after the New York Summit 1988), to discuss the end of the Cold War. During the summit both parties declared that they would never start a Hot War against each other, although no agreements were signed in writing, this letter was. See illustration
