A 17th Century carved oak settle, the back with reeded finials above panels of foliate scrolls, dragons, lozenge motifs and inscription ''God's Providene Is Mine Inheritance, Thomas Reresby 1621'', with hinged box seat below, the front and sides with further lozenge motifs, 67 x 24 x 53in. high. PROVENANCE Bears previous catalogue description from unknown sale Lot 212: ''A fine old *** with box seat... from Eastwood Hall, Ashover, Derbyshire, which residence with all the fine carved oak furniture (see old records of Ashover for full and interesting account), was sold in 1623, by Sir. Thomas Reresby and the owner to the Rev. Emanuel Bourne, Rector of Ashover. After allowing them time to remove their chattels the Hall was blown up by gunpowder in 1646, by The Commonwealth Army...''.
