August Walla ''Kriegverbrecherirrenhaus''/''Walla im Russland'' (self portrait as a Russian girl) Pencil, coloured crayon and biro on paper (decorated both sides) 29.7 x 21cm Unframed Exhibited: Galerie Gugging, September 2001. See illustrations Biography: Born Klosterneuburg, Austria, 1936. During World War II Walla's mother Aloisia, raised him as a girl to spare him from the draft. Made his first drawings at the age of 10. Diagnosed as schizophrenic at the age of 17 and began a lifetime habit of writing, making objects and graffiti. Admitted to Gugging Hospital 1970.
