A cased 54 bore five shot Tranter patent percussion revolver, by James Beattie & Son, 205 Regent Street West, London, No. 22699 T, London proof marks c.1860, the blued, rifled, octagonal barrel signed by maker, the blued frame engraved with floral scrolls and serial number, steel Tranter patent loading lever, cylinder and trigger guard, chequer cut walnut grip and blued steel butt cap engraved with further foliate scrolls, 12in. (30.5cms) long; the original mahogany fitted case with maker's label to lid interior and baize-lined fitted interior, fittings to include: Tranter's lubricating bullets and lubricating composition, in original tins with labels; Tranter's patent bullet mould; a James Dixon & Sons powder flask in steel and lacquered brass; an ebony handled key; ramrod; and other instruments, case 14 3/4 x 8 x 2 1/2in. (37.5 x 20 x 6cms). PROVENANCE Previously the pistol of William Blake Richmond, KCB, RA (1842-1921), this pistol said to have been given to Richmond to protect him through the Alps on his Grand Tour trip to Rome, sold by instruction of a descendant.
