Lot details
† Roger Fenton (1819-1869) ''HENRY DUBERLY ESQ., PAYMASTER, 8TH HUSSARS & MRS. DUBERLY'' photograph: albumen print, published by Thomas Agnew & Sons, 1856; on original heavy paper folio sheet, unframed 15 x 14.5cms; 6 x 5 5/8in. NB Capt. Henry Duberly was Paymaster to the 8th Royal Irish Hussars, part of the British Cavalry that took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade. His wife, Frances Isabella (''Fanny'') (1829-1903) was notable for producing a journal of her experiences on campaign in the Crimean War and the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Her account of experiences in the Crimea was published as Journal kept during the Russian War. She travelled to the Crimea with her husband in 1854 and stayed with him throughout his time there despite the protests of commanders such as Lord Lucan. She was the only officer's wife at the front and this portrait was taken by Fenton in 1855. Thomas Agnew & Sons, Fenton's publishers, issued 337 photographs on published mounts, individually or as parts of sets, between November 1855 and April 5th, 1856. See illustration
