† A Private Soldier of the 68th (Durham) Light Infantry (19th Century) ''A MAORI WAR DANCE'' with printed inscription on the mount and pencil inscription verso watercolour 31 x 22.6cms; 12 1/4 x 9in., unframed. NB This interesting contemporary illustration of Maori dance and facial tattooing was originally part of the collection of Hubert Horatio Shirley Morant (1840-1930) of the 68th (Durham) Light Infantry. During his service in the 1860's New Zealand Land Wars he was acquainted with Gordon Robley (later Major General) of that regiment. Robley was a prominent collector and authority on Mokomokai, and author of the book Moko; or Maori Tattooing, Chapman and Hall 1896, which is offered in this auction, see Lot 654. See illustration
