Lot details
Attributed to Tomaso de Simone (Italian c.1805-1888) A PORTRAIT OF THE TRANSITIONAL-PERIOD MERCHANT SHIP S.S. IDA IN STORMY SEAS signed with surname, inscribed and dated '85 gouache 42 x 65cms; 16 1/2 x 25 3/4in. NB The schooner-rigged tramp steamship IDA of 1305 gross registered tons, was built in 1883 by Hall, Russell & Co. of Aberdeen for Pyman, Bell & Co. of Newcastle, whose funnel livery she is wearing in this portrait. In 1907 she was sold to owners in Norway and on 8th February, 1917 she was sunk in the North Sea by a German submarine. This portrait by de Simone - either Tomaso or Antonio - will almost certainly have started life as the ''Foul Weather'' constituent of a fair weather/foul weather pair. See illustration
