New Year, New Interior styling?

New Year, New Interior styling?

The start of a new year often brings with it the thirst and drive for change. If you’re thinking of renovating or restyling your home in 2022, here are some of the top interior design trends that will set you ahead of the curve.

 1 – Bold Colour

Bold colours and patterns, especially shades of green are set to be big this year, with the continuing theme of bringing the outdoor inside.

Our connection to nature and the world around us has never been more important – during the pandemic, or post. Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director of Dulux has commented: 'After so long trapped indoors we have come to appreciate the power of nature to uplift and revitalise us. Colour-wise we are throwing open the doors and windows and inviting every shade of nature in for tea.'

In addition, Beth Diana Smith of Beth Diana Smith Interior Design said "I expect to see a lot of bold colour and patterns reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s, and green in all shades as we continue to bring the outdoors in.”

Currently, bold colour and patterns are proving very popular with our clients. Bright glass and ceramics are often highly sort after by bidders. The recent launch of our textiles department has gained a lot of attention. Bright retro samplers, fabrics and soft furnishings are in high demand this year! – Georgina Norman, A&G vintage textiles expert.

 2 – Traditional details

Home comfort and traditional styling is set to be big this year with many opting for timeless classics and antique furniture.

"In 2022, we are seeing traditional details making a big comeback. With so much change around the world over the past few years, it’s no surprise that more and more people are craving a sense of comfort, timelessness or even a bit of nostalgia in their homes. From pattern mixing, skirted or flanged furniture, and the incorporation of antique pieces, this new year is all about honoring our roots. And we couldn’t be happier about it!” — Bria Hammel, Bria Hammel Interiors

“We have seen an increase in demand for traditionally styled furniture items at auction. Antiques are not just for grand stately homes, they can add a touch of elegance to any space. Our bi-weekly Homes & Interiors Auctions or quarterly Country House & Fine Interiors auctions are the perfect place to source exquisite antique gems” – Hannah Murphy, A&G Homes and Interiors Manager

3 – Sustainability

Sustainability is set to remain at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Pinterest's annual trend report predicts raw materials and nature-focused designs will also dominate this year.

"There is ever more focus on sustainability in our homes, from the products we use to how we design a space," says designer Jojo Bradley. "Think reclaimed, recycled, pre-loved, and ethically sourced."

“It’s our responsibility to be as sustainable and ecofriendly as possible. There are few better ways of doing that than buying at auction. The furniture we see coming through our doors is high quality and has lots of life left in it. It’s fantastic to see such magnificent pieces going off to new homes and the fact it’s an environmentally friendly method of buying is just fantastic.” said Iain Byatt-Smith, A&G furniture expert.

4 – The 70’s are back!

Think BOLD & beautiful!

"Seventies decor and colours are back. We will be seeing more terracotta, sage and mustard colors as well as mid-century furniture trademarks — peg legs on cabinets and tables, teak wood tones and highly textured fabrics." — Malka Helft, Think Chic Interiors

“Retro and mid-century modern furniture is certainly back in!” said Fred Wyrley – Birch, A&G Director. “Our quarterly Modern auctions are proving more popular than ever. Furniture, soft furnishings and art from this period are attracting huge interest from both UK and overseas bidders.

5 – Something old, something new

"I think that the trend for defining your home will lean more towards incorporating reworked vintage finds and heritage furnishings into the home, as well as incorporating more custom furniture pieces to make [your] home uniquely yours," shares designer Joy Williams.

“If you’re looking for items that are more unusual and unique for your home, then buying at auction is certainly for you. The pieces you can find in an auction house are so diverse, ranging from contemporary modern gems to traditional regal pieces, there’s something to suit every taste and budget.” said Julian Thomson, A&G MD.

With over 50 specialist sales each year, Anderson & Garlands calendar is always packed full of auctions too good to be missed. To view the 2022 sales schedule, please use the link below.
