September has been an exceptionally busy month here at Anderson & Garland. We held five specialist auctions which totalled nearly £700,000, including the Country House & Fine Interiors; Fine Jewellery & Watches; and The Collectors’ Auctions. All were highly successful, with bidders from across the world battling against each other to acquire the outstanding high-quality lots on offer. We welcomed thousands of bidders, both in-person and online, which gave the sale days a fantastic energy and buzz.

Top Lots

Top selling lots included a rare early 18th-century walnut bachelors’ chest which, after a furious bidding battle between UK and the US bidders, sold for £13,000 over the phone to a buyer from the Home Counties. Other highlights included a stunning late 19th-century Secessionist cherrywood occasional table, attracting an exceptionally high volume of interest before selling to a French buyer for £8,500. An eye-catching painting of a World War I anti-aircraft battery, by Sunderland-born artist Septimus Edwin Scott, fetched £7600 from a London buyer; and a lady’s 18ct. yellow gold Rolex went to a local buyer for £5100.

In addition to the individual lots, we had the pleasure of selling several collections too. The first part of Hexham man Jim Hedley’s lifetime collection of specialist books, manuscripts, and pamphlets smashed its pre-sale estimate of £15,000-£25,000, selling for over £30,000. This bodes well for the remaining sections of the collection being sold later this year and in early 2022. A collection of personal football memorabilia also performed well, consisting of honours awarded to local legend Stan Anderson during his career playing for Newcastle United, Sunderland FC, and England and then in management at Middlesbrough FC. Comprising of 17 lots, the group attracted worldwide attention from ardent football fans and collectors, realizing over £9500 on sale day.

Our bimonthly Homes & Interiors Auctions are a great place to start if you’re thinking about the fast-approaching festive season.  After 18 months without entertaining, perhaps a dinner service, some candelabra or a fine antique furniture set might be the perfect addition to your home.

Alternatively, you may be looking to free up some space ahead of Christmas and have items that you’re interested in offering for auction. If so, we’re here to help. Entries are now invited for a range of sales in November and December which include Wine, Whisky & Spirits and also Country House & Fine Interiors, Silver & Jewellery, and Watches.
