The Ian Penman Collection of Silver Age and Bronze Age American Comics

The man behind the collection

For almost six decades, Ian Penman’s name has been synonymous with the exciting, creative world of comic books; in particular those from DC and Marvel.

Joining Supermen of America in 1961, Ian started collecting comics as a child and a lifetime’s passion was born. For one US Dollar, Ian became a member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society (MMMS). His name ‘ceremoniously entered’ into its ‘logbook’, Ian vowed to use his ‘valued membership privileges judiciously being true to the Marvel Code of ethics’, a commitment he aspired to honour for the rest of his life. A few years later, the 18-year-old student blew the entirety of his first term’s college grant on comics.

During the early 1970s, quickly developing a reputation as a comic aficionado, Ian published the comic fanzines Armageddon and Oracle, both achieving worldwide circulation.

Over the decades, Ian interviewed and worked with creatives and other trailblazers from the comic world including Stan Lee, Dave Gibbons, Alan Moore, Chris Claremont, Brian Bolland, Alan Davis, Mike Cruden, Jim Marshall, Ken Simpson, Jeff Morgan, Steve Craddock and Dez Skinn.

His untimely death in 2021 sees the offering for auction of a treasure trove of around 20,000 comics.  Built by a devoted comic connoisseur, this is truly a lifetime’s collection.

The Ian Penman Estate and family are proud to be working with Anderson and Garland to present for auction, Ian’s incredible comic legacy.
