Why collect Whisky and Wine?

The post-pandemic investment landscape is still filled with uncertainty, with many of the traditional investment routes still deemed too unpredictable.

However, for fine Wine and Whisky, the picture looks very different. The sector has seen significant levels of growth, outperforming almost all others. A recent Knight Frank Wealth report named Whisky as the top-performing collectable of the last decade, with a whopping rise of 58.6%. Following on behind, Wine saw steady gains too, delivering an average annual return of 13.6%, over a fifteen-year period.

What to look out for

Whilst choosing a nice bottle of wine to share over dinner is one thing, choosing a bottle to invest in requires a different set of selection criteria. Most significantly, bottles bought for investment purposes are rarely, if ever, opened or consumed, so the value should, in theory, only ever go up. However, as the 2008 crash showed, investing is not as simple as that, and markets can turn. When choosing a Wine or Whisky for investment, the best advice would be to firstly, do your research on the market, then, if you feel confident in taking the plunge, go for rarity and quality. The most collectable brands are currently Scottish and Japanese, however serious collectors also look to American, Irish, and other whiskies.
