Our History

Anderson & Garland can trace their origins back to 1840 and is the leading Fine Art Auction House in the North of England and Scottish Borders today.

An amalgamation between Newcastle's Anderson, Son & Hedley and Atkinson & Garland in 1913, gave birth to the present trading name, and for the following 75 years the firm was based at Anderson House, Market Street, Newcastle upon Tyne - the first purpose-built auction rooms outside of London at the time.

After an explosion in the antiques industry in the 1970’s & 80’s Anderson & Garland grew significantly, and in 1988, due to an increasing pressure on space, the company relocated for only the second time in its history, to a larger premises at Marlborough House on Marlborough Crescent, Newcastle. Here the firm was immediately able to take advantage of its vastly increased display and selling opportunities. The first day of the inaugural auction realised record figures for certain items and a record for a single days selling at the time.

By 2005, further expansion meant another move. This time to a purpose-built saleroom in Westerhope, just of the A1, in Newcastle. With ample free parking and just minutes’ drive from Newcastle international airport and Central Station, this state-of-the-art facility, with its spacious light galleries and connectivity, is perfectly equipped for today’s fast paced business environment.

Having embraced internet marketing and live bidding way back in the noughties, the firm's British clients have now been joined by those from across the globe. Today we have clients in over 100 countries worldwide, allowing us to achieve the highest prices possible for our vendors.

Throughout its history Anderson & Garland have had the pleasure of selling many special high value items and collections. Some highlights include:  The Merrivale Stable, a unique work of art by iconic street artist Banksy, which sold for £1,000,000. (inc fees); the stunning Jacobson Collection, which included works by L.S.Lowry, Henry Moore and David Bomberg; a world record breaking Lalique vase which sold for £280,000; and the Heppe Collection of rare Outsider Art.

Today, with over 180 years’ experience, and over 20 specialist departments, we continue to offer the best service, by far, to solicitors, bankers, trustees, executors and private individuals in our region and beyond. So, whether you’re selling a single item, a collection, or whole house contents, it pays to choose Anderson & Garland.
