This work is included in Sheila Fell, Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings, J Andrew Bradley and Eleanor Bradley, Lund Humphries, June 2025. It is catalogued in the publication as number 297 'Haycart: towards Evening, Cumberland' on page 313, along with the following comments:
"This is one of five paintings featuring a horse-drawn cart in the foreground and completed in 1969/70 (catalogue nos. 295, 297-0 and 303). These works resemble each other in their composition, with heavy wintry skies occupying more than half of each canvas and overshadowing the farmland below, with a horizontal road and farm cart at the foot of each image."
In an account “My Sheila Fell paintings and my memories of Her”, the former owner – a close childhood friend of the Fell family wrote “…I think we then had recently bought our third painting – Hay-making near Brothers Water – which is my title for it, based on what she told me when we bought it, which also included the information that this too was based on sketches made while out with Mr. Lowry…I found out later that she painted at least one other version of this subject.
P.S. Since writing the above, I got Cate Haste’s book about Sheila off the shelf and discovered the bill for the Haycart picture. She called the picture “Haycart towards Evening, Cumberland”. It is 20”x24” and dated 1970. I paid £150 for it, but the bill is not receipted, and I’m not sure whether she or her mother wrote it. At some time in the past, I have added (near Brothers Water) to the title.”
Sold for £18,000
