Theodoros Stamos Untitled 1947 Signed and dated Gouache on paper 30.4 x 44.4cm Biography: Born New York on Manhattan's Lower East Side to Greek immigrant parents, 31st December 1922. As a teenager won a scholarship to the American Artists' School and studied sculpture under Joseph Solman. Visits Alfred Stieglitz's An American Place Gallery 1937. First solo exhibition at the Betty Parsons Wakefield Gallery 1943. Became a member of the Irascible Eighteen during the late 1940's. One of the original and youngest abstract expressionist artist in the 1940's and 50's. Inspired by Asian mysticism and East Asian aesthetics c.1950. Began the Sun-Box series 1962. Infinity Field series post 1971. Implicated in the Rothko Case - twelve year law suit and art scandal. Died 2nd February 1997.
