Banksy makes A&G history

This week’s Modern Art & Design Auction was one for the Anderson & Garland record book. The star lot, an original work by street artist Banksy, titled ‘The Merrivale Stable’, went under the hammer in front of a bustling saleroom, full of bidders, media, and spectators.

As auctioneer and Anderson & Garland MD, Julian Thomson, took to the rostrum, a buzz of excitement filled the air. As the bidding went higher, three telephone bidders battled it out to secure the unique piece. A wave of applause then broke out as it sold to a UK private collector for just over 1 million pounds including fees. Overall, it took just two minutes to achieve the highest price in A&G’s history, setting a record for a work of art sold in the North of England.

“We were thrilled to be chosen by the owners to sell the piece on their behalf. Although now based in East Anglia, they have strong family ties to the region and their parents frequented our saleroom. From the moment this great story hit the press, it grabbed the attention of collectors from across the globe. Interest was high and that ultimately produced plenty of bidders on the day. The vendors put their faith in Anderson & Garland and we delivered a great result” said Julian

After the auction the vendor said” My family and I are absolutely delighted with the result achieved today. It’s a fantastic result for the park and we’ve enjoyed the whole auction experience.”
