A sketch of an iconic Sunderland landmark is expected to fetch up to £30,000 at auction.

The pencil sketch, titled 'Penshaw Monument' by renowned artist, L.S. Lowry, will go up for auction in Newcastle in March and is estimated to fetch between £20,000 to £30,000. The sketch was created by the artist during one of his many visits to Wearside, when he often stayed at the Seaburn Hotel on the seafront.

The Penshaw Monument sketch was later exhibited and sold through The Stone Gallery in Newcastle for £350 to a private collector. The collector who owned the sketch is now relocating and is putting it up for auction.

John Anderson, Picture Specialist at Anderson & Garland Auctioneers said: "Lowry is unquestionably the north’s premier modern artist and is one of Britain's best loved artists. His distinctive style captured the lives of industrial city life in northern England."

The vendor of the work is a private collector and has treasured the piece for many years, but the sketch has now went up for sale due to the relocation of the collector and lack of space.

The Penshaw Monument artwork comes with the receipt from The Stone Gallery and will go up for auction along with an original lithograph print by Lowry titled ‘Shapes & Sizes’, which has an estimate of between £3,000 -£5,000, and a limited edition print of ‘An Industrial Town’, with an estimate of £1,000 to £2000. The auction will take place at Anderson & Garland Auctioneers on March 21, 22 and 23.

In October, an LS Lowry work depicting the North Sea at Sunderland fetched over £1m at auction. The painting, called The North Sea, which was signed and dated in 1966, is said to be one of the finest examples of Lowry’s large scale sea paintings and was sold for over £1m at Tennants Auctioneers’ Modern and Contemporary Art Sale.
