Professor Richard George Hatton (1864-1926, attributed) for The (Newcastle) Handicrafts Company: a rare pair of carved oak and silver mounted candlesticks, the silver cylindrical sconces with drip pan collars, on oak stems with central knop mounted in silver and decorated with stylised ribbon scrolls, raised on octagonal bases, hallmarked for Birmingham 1903, 17in. (44cms) high. NB Established under the patronage of Charles William Mitchell in 1899 and run by Professor R.G. Hatton, The Newcastle Handicrafts Company produced work of the highest quality. Only a handful of pieces are know to exist, this lot being the only known pair of oak and silver candlesticks. See illustration
