George Garden Colville (Australian 1887-1970) A FARM IN SUMMER signed oil on board 22 x 29.5cms; 8 3/4 x 11 1/2in; together with A TREE STUDY signed oil on board 47 x 37cms; 18 1/2 x 14 1/2in. (2) NB Born in Aberdeen, Colville moved to Australia in 1892. He studied painting at Victoria School of Art under Frederick McCubbin after 1910. He enlisted in the Army in 1914 and sketched throughout his service in WWI. After the War he became a founding member of the TWenty Melbourne Painters and exhibited widely. During the period 1949-1950 he was an official War Artist documenting the life and activities of the Occupational Forces in Japan. After returning to Australia, Colville won the Albury Prize in 1951 and continued to paint until his death in Melbourne at the age of 83.
