19th Century English School A HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF A SPORTSMAN LOADING A GUN with inscription ''Vigila-et-Ora'' (watch and pray) oil on canvas 86 x 68cms; 33 3/4 x 26 3/4in. NB Vigila-et-Ora is the motto for the Roger's family crest. The reference is Christ's injunction to His disciples in St. Matthews Gospel. It is also the motto of the town of Bourne in Lincolnshire, derived from the arms of the Wake family, medieval lords of the manor of Bourne; and although the label and inscription are a relatively modern original, this may provide some clue as to the identity of the subject of this portrait.
