John Robert Murray McCheyne R.S.A. (1911-1982): Born in Edinburgh, he was educated at Kirkcaldy High School and later studied at The Edinburgh College Of Art. He was awarded the Chalmers Bursary at The Royal Scottish Academy School and worked under Alexander Carrick. After this he travelled Europe, including Copenhagen, Athens, Florence and Greece, coming back to take-up a position of Master Of Sculpture at Kings College, (now Newcastle University) in 1939. In addition to his role as a teacher he regularly exhibited works and undertook commissions, more notably, including ''The Family Group'', Shield Field Estate Housing Committee 1959, Newcastle; ''Seahorse Heads'', Tower of Civic Centre, Newcastle Upon Tyne 1968; ''St. Michael'' and ''Mother and Child'', Church Of St. Michael & All Saints, Christchurch New Zealand; ''A Water Kelpie'', Scottish Pavilion; and exhibited his works at The Royal Scottish Academy Exhibition 1935; Palace Of Arts Exhibition Scotland 1938; The Royal Glasgow Institute Of Fine Arts Annual Exhibition 1951; and his last 'One Man' Exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery 1970. He shows major influences from Henry Moore, as well as Gerhard Hemming.
