19th Century British School A PORTRAIT OF COLONEL JAMES HENDERSON OF FOSWELL BANK, AUCHTERADA, PERTH (1741-1811), AND HIS WIFE ELIZA PIERCY oil on canvas 75 x 62cms; 29 1/2 x 25 1/2in. (a pair) NB As a boy Henderson went to live with relatives in Jamaica and later acquired a large sugar plantation and a commission from king George to raise a regiment and the warship 'The Royal George' to cruise the Spanish Main during the War against the French. Port Henderson Jamaica was named after him. In 1790 he settled in Scotland at Foswell Bank, was made Freeman of Stirling and Dunfermline, and had his portrait painted by Opie. He is burred in Auchterader Cemetery. His young wife Eliza Piercy, by repute ''A Beauty of Bath'', was born in County Cork. See illustration
