Stanley ''Stan'' Johnson (20th Century) ''They Marched'' - British prisoners of war marching through East Prussia during the winter of 1945 signed; inscribed ''Painted from memory by S. Johnson in memory of the suffering of five years behind the barbed wire. Sept. 2001'' verso oil on board 33 x 38.5cms; 13 x 15 1/4, unframed. NB The Artist was captured at Dunkirk in 1940 whilst fighting with the Lancashire Fusiliers. This picture depicts the suffering he and other captured British soldiers endured during a forced march of over 1000 miles from camps in Poland to Germany in the face of advancing Russian forces.
