J*** Gilbert (19th Century) ''THE BARQUE CONSUL OFF THE NORTH PIER TYNEMOUTH, DECEMBER 17TH, 1873'' AND ''THE E. BOUCHER WITH THE TYNEMOUTH LIFEBOAT POMFRET & GOOLE 3.00AM, JANUARY 6TH, 1867'' signed (l.r.); with inscriptions on labels verso grisailles: oils on boards 20 x 34.5cms; 8 x 13 3/4in. (a pair). NB The barque Consul was wrecked on the north pier at Tynemouth, three of the crew were rescued by Lifeboat Brigade using the Breeches Buoy. Brigade member Robert Thirlway Arkley was washed off the pier and drowned. To-date he is the only Brigade member to lose his life while on call for the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade. The Pomfret & Goole self-righting lifeboat was built of mahogany by Forrest at the cost of £248.00 paid for by the Pomfret & Goole Lifeboat Fund. Stationed at Tynemouth, Black Middens, she was launched eleven times saving seventeen lives. In 1874 she was refurbished and transferred to Molefre; launched seven times saving twelve lives. She was broken up in 1884. See illustration
