George Edward Horton (1859-1950) ''THE BRIG ANNE AGROUND AT HERD SANDS'' signed; with inscriptions on labels verso watercolour 49 x 70cms; 19 1/4 x 27 1/2in. NB The brig Anne was registered in 1860 at the Port of London and owned by Thomas D. Hoper. Whilst sailing for Shields from London, she was driven on to the Herd Sands near the Groyne Lighthouse by a South-East gale at 10.45pm on the 2nd October, 1871. The Tyne Lifeboat Society boat Tyne rescued all of the crew of seven. The hulk was sold at auction, repaired and re-registered in 1872 at South Shields.
