18th Century Dutch School ''ARTEMISIA QUEEN OF CARIA'' with indistinct inscription verso watercolour on vellum laid on panel 24 x 20cms; 9 1/2 x 7 3/4in. NB Artemisia was wife of Mausolus, Satrap of Caria in Asia Minor. She succeeded her husband on his death in 353BC and erected a great monument to his memory at Halicarnassus - ''hence Mausoleum'' - one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It was said that she mixed the ashes of Mausolus in liquid which she then drank making of herself a living tomb and symbolizing a widow's devotion to her husband's memory.
